Old Town Nessebar
Old Town Nessebar
The ancient city with thousands of years of history is on a romantic rocky peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. The peninsula is 850 m long and 300 m wide. Valuable monuments from all eras of its millennial existence have been preserved here: old fortress walls from the Roman era and the Middle Ages, Byzantine and Old Bulgarian churches, ancient houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The greatest wealth of the town are the numerous churches: from the early Byzantine period are the two three-aisled basilicas - "St. Sophia" /Old Metropolia/ - one of the most imposing buildings in Nessebar and the Basilica on the north bank "Eleusa" from the V - VI century. Because of its unique historical colour, in 1983 the town was included in the World Heritage List. Today the old part of the town is an attractive place for romantic walks along the narrow cobbled streets between shops offering handmade souvenirs - pottery, knitwear, jewellery. Against the backdrop of the splendid antique atmosphere there is a unique opportunity for relaxation.
